Darian Lajoie. Mechanical Failure. 5.5 x 4.5 inches; 2015; encaustic, found objects, ink, resin. $45 This small mechanical automaton has been cobbled together from broken watch gears and components. Since it came out looking rather Frankenstein-esque I gave it a background of distressed ink and encaustic paint in shades of red and acid green and yellow. It is encased in over-heated resin, which caused blobs of the encaustic to pull away from the background and float to the top of the piece, further distressing it and partially obscuring the automaton. The poor little fellow is broken but gamely remains upright.
