Darian Lajoie. Chemical Imbalance; 10x12 inches; 2015; acrylic, found objects, resin. $85 This piece is meant to illustrate the stark difference between what we ideally want ourselves to be and the reality of what actually is when brain chemistry is unbalanced. The left side at the top represents some of the actual brain chemistry. Below it are pictured some of the outcomes and symptoms of chemical imbalance. The left of the picture is the actuality of what it is to live with depression. The right side of the picture is what we want the world to see and what we ideally hope ourselves to be and the connections and intricacies between those two worlds. I thought it would be interesting to portray that connection with parts of a remote control panel to show the breakdown in communication between the brain chemistry and the sense of self, and what it feels like to know that who one really is, or is meant to be, is masked and distorted when living with depression and anxiety.
